As of March 7th, 2014, we have received responses from 41 companies; 15 from North America, 24, Europe, and 2 from other areas. Their types of business are: 14 Manufacturers, 14 Traders, 9 are engaged in both, and 3 unknown. Most manufacturers are operating sawmills, and all traders are engaged in an international trading.
(A) General view of the company about illegal logging
As to the recognition of illegal logging issue, 25 respondents out of 41 answered “it is a problem”. 13 replied “Others” among which many responded “illegal logging is a global problem but we do not see any problem within our country”. Only 3 answered “it is not so big problem as some people are propagating.”

(B) Systems for avoiding/solving illegal logging problems
28 out of 41 respondents replied “We have a system to avoid/solve illegal logging problems.” When we look into the comments of “Others”, most of them replied as any one of the following: “we only deal with FSC/PEFC certified timber”, “we undertake the 3rd party assessment”, or “we only deal with timber that comes from countries where illegal logging is strictly controlled”. Is can be said that in general each company is taking a responsibility of implementing measures to cope with the illegally-harvested timber.

That for “Traders” who sell/buy timbers that are already existing in EU region are 8, consisting of 4 North-Americans and 4 Europeans. 13 replied that they are neither “Operators” nor “Traders”, who are 9 North-Americans, 2 Europeans and 2 from other areas.
